Meet Dr. Sherry Barnett

Board Certified Allergist & Immunologist

I was diagnosed with asthma & eczema as an infant and spent most of my childhood in the Allergist’s and ENT’s office. As a child, I wanted to be a veterinarian but unfortunately was highly allergic to most animals. When it came time to decide on a career path in college I took a leap of faith and decided to become a doctor even without having any doctors in my family.

After clinical rotations in medical school, it became clear that I was destined to be an Allergy/Asthma specialist.  While it was a long road getting there, I’ve been so blessed in my career as an Allergist that I can’t imagine doing anything else.  I’ve personally been the one in the ER room unable to breathe, the one getting allergy shots for years on end and the one having to remember to take my inhaler twice a day. This gives me a unique perspective and empathy for my patients and the struggles their families experience in managing allergic conditions.

I’ve lived in Flower Mound since 2008 and love this community.  I am a covenant member of The Village Church and volunteered for over 10 years with CMA/Pediplace in Lewisville. I enjoy baking and spending time in the country when I’m not working. I look forward to continuing to provide care to the Flower Mound and southern Denton County area at Barnett Allergy Asthma Center.

When to See an Allergist

Allergies and asthma can affect the skin, lungs, sinuses, and digestive system. If symptoms persist or interfere with daily life, a specialist evaluation can provide answers and a clear treatment plan.

Skin Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Raised, red or skin-colored welts

  • Intensely itchy rashes

  • Rashes that change location, appearing and disappearing within 24 hours

  • Possible associated swelling of the lips, eyelids, hands, or feet

  • Sudden onset itching with blotchy, migrating welts that resolve without bruising or scarring.

  • Dry, rough, scaly patches of skin

  • Red or darker-than-usual areas of skin (depending on skin tone)

  • Intense itch without a rash

  • Skin that cracks, oozes, or crusts when flared

  • Skin often looks chronically dry and thickened from scratching

  • Burning sensation

  • Sometimes small blisters or peeling

  • Clearly outlined area matching exposure to a chemical, metal, or personal care product

Cough & Breathing Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • A cough that lingers after a cold and “just won’t clear up”

  • Can be dry and hacking, or sometimes wet with mucus

  • Worse at night or when lying down

  • Triggered by talking, laughing, cold air, or strong smells

  • Associated with throat clearing or a tickling sensation in the throat

  • Cough accompanied by post-nasal drip, chest tightness, or mild shortness of breath, with or without wheezing

  • May worsen at night or early morning

  • Triggered by exercise, cold air, laughter, or respiratory infections

  • May be associated with hoarseness, throat irritation, or a sour taste

Sinus & Nasal Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Runny nose

  • Chronic nasal congestion

  • Recurrent sinus infections

  • Post-nasal drip, clearing of the throat

  • Chronic sinusitis, including cases with nasal polyps

  • Cough

  • Eye watering, itch, or swelling

  • Decreased or absent sense of smell

Food & Digestive (GI) Symptoms

Severe reactions (anaphylaxis) can involve multiple body systems and require urgent medical care.

  • Hives, itching, flushing, swelling of lips, face, tongue, or eyelids soon after consuming a particular food item.

  • GI symptoms: Nausea Vomiting Abdominal cramping Diarrhea

  • Respiratory symptoms: Coughing Wheezing Shortness of breath Throat tightness Hoarseness

  • Cardiovascular symptoms: Dizziness, Fainting, Pale or weak feeling

See an allergist if:

  • Symptoms happen quickly after eating

  • Reactions involve more than one body system

  • There is swelling, breathing difficulty, or fainting

  • You are avoiding foods without a clear diagnosis

Other reasons to see an Allergist for GI symptoms:

  • Persistent vomiting

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Food getting stuck

  • Chronic diarrhea (Symptoms repeatedly occur with the same food)

  • There are hives, swelling, or breathing symptoms

  • There is concern for anaphylaxis

  • You need guidance on safe food reintroduction
